Most air conditioner failures could be prevented with proper maintenance. Did you know that the outdoor needs to be cleaned on a yearly basis?

If your central air conditioning unit is more than 12 years old, replacing it with an ENERGY STAR qualified model could cut your cooling costs by 30%.

It has been proven in many studies that air conditioning units can contain certain kinds of bacteria. Poor maintenance of air conditioning units may thus result in health problems for your family members, especially older people and children.

It is predicted that market demand for R-22 will be 20% higher than the available supply in 2010.

Help out your air conditioner in the summer with the use the ceiling fan. Switch the motor to spin in the counter-clockwise direction. While standing directly under the ceiling fan you should feel a cool breeze. The airflow produced creates a wind-chill effect, making you “feel” cooler.

An older 10-SEER air conditioner requires 1,200 watts of power to produce one ton of cooling (12,000 BTUs). Every point upward results in approximately a 5% increase in energy efficiency. A 15-SEER rated A/C unit would consume only about 800 watts to produce that same one ton of cooling.

An air conditioner with a two-stage compressor will only run on the lower stage on warm days. This provides adequate cooling, but the compressor runs more quietly and for a longer period of time, which gives the system more of an opportunity to remove moisture from the air. The lower the humidity indoors, the higher you’re likely to set the thermostat, which results in energy savings.

Whenever you replace your outdoor condensing unit, you should have your indoor evaporator coil replaced. The indoor coil should be matched with the outdoor unit in order the achieve proper SEER rating. Another reason you should have a new evaporator coil installed is because of dirt build up that probably exists within the coil, reducing your air flow and rendering your equipment less efficient.

On every install, you have the choice as to whether you would like to have your unit installed on a ground pad or on rails mounted to your foundation. With the rail mounts, you do not have to worry about your air conditioner sagging—which can lead to refrigerant leaks and compressor failure.

All of Rheem/Ruud’s residential air conditioners come with the highly esteemed Copeland scroll compressor. This compressor is known for its quiet and efficient operation. The replacement of your air conditioner’s compressor can be your most costly of repairs, so you want to have the best available. This compressor is actually described as a part that wears in rather than wearing out, improving its operation as it ages.

Save Money: Install Units with R-410A Refrigerant

Schneider Heating & Cooling, Inc. desires to give its customers the most environmental and economical deal. That is why Schneider Heating & Cooling sells only units that use the R-410A refrigerant. Other companies may choose to sell R-22 units at a discounted rate, but we choose to price the R-410A units at the same level knowing that it will save you money in the long run.

As the cost for R-22 increases (an estimated 41% in the past two years), it would be in the interest of all to make the switch to the earth-friendly R-410A. For more information on the R-22 phase out timeline, please check out the chart below and view the EPA’s informative brochure.

Tax Credit

Save even more money by installing one of the units that qualifies for the tax credit. You will receive a tax credit of 30% (up to $1,500) of the cost you incur related to the purchase and installation of any of the qualifying units. Look for a yellow starburst to learn which of the following units qualify for the tax credit!

You need to be aware that you can only receive a maximum of $1,500 for the home energy efficiency improvement tax credit per year.

You will receive a certificate of proof with each installation of a unit that qualifies for the tax credit.

Units that Use R-410A Refrigerant

These units come with the earth-friendly R-410A refrigerant. While containing the same features as the models using the old R-22 refrigerant, their selling points are both environmental and financial. As the cost for R-22 rises, future service work done on your unit that would require replacing the refrigerant will end up costing you more.

Weather King AJL Series: 13 SEER This unit’s cube shape enables it to fit in virtually any location. The main difference in this unit and the Rheem/Ruud unit is this one features the new Benchmark Bristol reciprocating compressor. Sound tests have rated this compressor to be quieter than the Copeland scroll compressor that is featured in the Rheem/Ruud units.

Rheem/Ruud UANL Series:  13 SEER These units are designed to protect the condenser coils from denting, the fan from damaging the motor, and the unit from corroding on the bottom from moisture. Service time is also decreased by ease of access.

Rheem/Ruud UAPL Series:  14 SEER See the information listed for the previous unit. Due to the money saving efficiency of this unit, you would qualify for the tax credit should you choose to install this unit.

Rheem/Ruud UARL Series:  16 SEER A two-stage model that features the Comfort Control System. The two-stage compressor will take advantage of the staging options on your furnace to cool your home at either low or high speed. The low-speed energy saving feature reduces forceful, cold drafts and humidity, keeping your house at a cool even temperature. This is an air conditioner that will actually work harder to cool your house when you lower the temperature, by switching to the higher speed.

Rheem/Ruud UASL Series:  18 SEER A two-stage model that features the Comfort Control System. See the note above to learn more about the benefits of the two-stage feature.

Effective January 1, 2010, manufacturers may no longer produce equipment that use the ozone depleting R-22 refrigerant.
